Giovanni Belzoni

Giovanni Belzoni, né à Padoue en 1778, quitte l'Italie en 1803 pour aller vivre en Angleterre où son goût de l'aventure l'amène à exercer différents métiers. Puis il entreprend des voyages au Portugal et en Espagne, se rend à Malte d'où il s'embarque pour Alexandrie en 1815. Après qu'il a tenté sans succès d'installer en Egypte des pompes hydrauliques de son invention, Salt, consul général britannique, lui propose en juin 1816 de rapporter à Alexandrie " le colosse de Memnon " et d'entreprendre pour son compte d'importantes investigations archéologiques dans la vallée des Rois et à Karnak.
